The closed Apple ecosystem reduces the risk of malware. This does not mean that Mac users are immune to threats. Phishing does work everywhere, also on Mac!

INNSBRUCK, TYROL, AUSTRIA, August 30, 2018 / — It is an often-heard view that macOS computers don’t need antivirus protection. Whilst it is certainly true that the population of macOS malware is tiny compared to that for Windows and Android, there have been instances of macOS malware getting into the wild. Moreover, Apple Mac security needs to be considered in the wider context of other types of attacks.

Read the full test here:

In addition, it should be noted that Apple themselves ship some anti-malware capabilities within macOS. Firstly, there is “Gatekeeper”, which warns which warns when apps without a digital signature are run. Then, there is “XProtect”, which checks files against known-malware signatures. Finally, apple provide MRT (Malware Removal Tool). Gatekeeper and MRT are essentially invisible to users and have no direct user interface for the user. System updates are installed automatically using the update process. Despite the built-in capabilities, some security experts recommend strengthening the defenses by adding in a third-party antivirus package. There are many good reasons for this. Firstly, the approach taken by Apple might be adequate for well-established malware, but might not respond quickly enough to emerging threats. Secondly, you might want a broader base of malware evaluation.

Some vendors’ macOS security products can detect malware aimed at other operating systems too. Hence an AV program on your macOS computer could effectively handle Windows and Android malware too. Of course, there is no method by which Windows or Android malware could directly infect a macOS device. However, there are scenarios where you might well benefit from scanning for such threats. For example, if you are given a USB stick of photos by one friend, who asks you to make a copy for a second friend. They both use Windows, but you are using a macOS computer. There is Windows malware on the USB stick, and you make a copy of all the files. In this scenario, it is useful to be able to ensure that malware is not inadvertently passed on from one friend to another, even if your own machine is not at risk.

Mac security programs can offer other capabilities too. For example, browser extensions can identify web sites which are potentially phishing locations. Readers should note that Mac users are just as vulnerable to phishing attacks as users of e.g. Windows, as phishing sites function by deceiving the user rather than by altering the operating system or browser.

Other packages might offer VPN (virtual private network) capabilities which can be very useful when you need to operate your computer in an untrusted environment, like a public location, internet café or other place where you are not sure of the integrity of the connection. You might also want to replace macOS’ built-in parental control capabilities with third party tools, if you believe this is more appropriate to your family needs.

Before purchasing a Mac security solution, you also need to decide on the size and scope of the protection you wish to deploy. It might be for a single computer, or to a laptop and desktop. Or you might have a family environment. There might be a mixture of macOS laptops and desktops, but also other devices too like Windows desktops and laptops, along with iOS and Android phones and tablets. For this environment, a broader and more flexible licensing package might well be appropriate.

This could allow you to purchase e.g. 5 licenses and then distribute them amongst your collection of devices. It could also give you the flexibility to transfer licensing from one device to a new item, e.g. if you need to replace an aging Windows laptop with a new MacBook. Some packages offer cloud-based management interfaces. Usually this is to cover the licensing of the packages, but some can also be used to initiate malware scans and device updates and manage parental control capabilities.

Experienced and responsible Mac users who are careful about which programs they install, and which sources they obtain them from, may well argue – very reasonably – that they are not at risk from Mac malware. However, we feel that non-expert users, children, and users who frequently like to experiment with new software, could definitely benefit from having security software on their Mac systems, in addition to the security features provided by the Mac OS itself. Readers who are concerned that third-party security software will slow their Mac down can be reassured that we considered this in our test; we did not observe any significant performance reduction during daily operations with any of the programs reviewed.

As with Windows computers, Macs can be made safer by employing good security practices. We recommend the following:

Do not use an administrator account for day-to-day computing
Use a sandboxed browser such as Google Chrome
Uninstall/disable the standalone Flash Player
Uninstall/disable Java unless it is essential for you
Keep your Mac operating system and third-party software up-to-date with the latest patches
Use secure passwords (the Mac includes the KeyChain password manager)
Deactivate any services such as Airport, Bluetooth or IPv6 that you don’t use
Be careful about which programs you install and where you download them from

You Are The Biggest IoT Security Threat!

Kimmo Aura, Program Director, Business Finland

Security is overlooked. Kimmo Aura, Program Director, Business Finland, Connectivity from Finland’s telecom acceleration program reviews IoT security today.

In IoT, whether consumer or industrial, humans are the biggest and hardest security problem to fix. ”

— Kimmo Aura, Program Director, Business Finland

HELSINKI, FINLAND, August 30, 2018 / — Lack of security is present in the consumer IoT market, personal and home devices and services as well as in the industrial IoT (IIoT) sector. Based on different research sources, the underlying reasons for security threats in the consumer and industrial markets are different, but the risks and damages to both can be irreparable and immeasurable in economic terms.

Consumer IoT Security

Over the next two years, the number of IoT devices entering households is predicted to climb steeply from nine devices per household currently to 500 by 2022 according to Gartner with IoT connectivity being bundled into products whether people want it or not.

According to a research funded by F-Secure, the leading cyber-security technology house, many IoT devices would go unprotected because consumers do not know how to change the manufacturers’ default security settings.

The drive to be the first to market has meant that many manufacturers have not even considered the security implications of their devices. They have either not built appropriate security measures, use inadequate measures or, in some cases, provide no settings at all.

Of even greater concern is the potential for IoT devices to be turned into eavesdropping mechanisms that can hear and see what is going on wherever they have been deployed. Online criminals could even access and control biometric data such as fingerprints, voices and facial images stored as digital data.

Long, deliberately unwieldy and confusing terms and conditions associated with the use of devices that users are practically forced to sign up, gives manufacturers the right to collect private data and control how its device is being used. Consumers largely remain oblivious to potential implications.

Lack of awareness will also result in significant security risks to individuals since IoT devices with limited security will easily connect to home Wi-Fi networks and other radio protocols such as Bluetooth, Zigbee and Z-Wave and use those networks to link to other devices such as computers, handheld appliances and mobile phones.

Industrial IoT Security

According to the 2018 SANS Industrial IoT Security Survey Report, most organisations globally are looking at a 10 to 25 per cent growth in the number of their connected devices. This will lead to the systems that are connected to IIoT devices to double in size every three to seven years.

Consequently, enterprises see network complexity as the single biggest reason for IoT security threats. Data, firmware, embedded systems and general endpoints are identified as the most vulnerable parts of IoT systems. Systems are scattered across numerous sites hosting autonomous end-points, which make configurations difficult to manage. The SANS poll also discovered that complex systems will open a responsibility issue. IoT professionals define IIoT endpoints differently and this in turn will become the basis for confusion surrounding responsibility for IIoT security.

In IIoT, the security issue is not in the software and hardware security features. According to Tosibox, the pioneering IoT company founded to make security easy, the only way to overcome the security threats due to complexity is to minimize the amount of manual configuration work. Its solutions are unique due to highly simplified and automated network and device configuration. This minimizes manual work, and thereby reduces the likelihood of human errors.

In IoT, whether consumer or industrial, humans are the biggest and hardest security problem to fix. End users often lack adequate tech skills, or do not care about the simplest security measures such as changing the default password. Sometimes it is product managers of device manufacturers who decide to trade security for faster time to market and higher bottom line. Sometimes it is IT managers or experts who get blown away by the gigantic complexity that this exponentially growing IoT system causes.

Rosemary Barclay of Bonne Santé Wellness Center Discusses What Dietary Supplements you should

Rosemary Barclay Old Lyme Ct

The internet has made new supplements and “professional advice” readily available. New supplement companies open left and right, who to trust?

OLD LYME, CONNECTICUT, UNITED STATES, August 29, 2018 / — There is no escaping it. Dietary supplement Fads are everywhere. Unfortunately, people do not understand when it is appropriate to use supplements. Rosemary Barclay, Old Lyme, Connecticut, Bonne Santé Wellness Center knows that it is easy to get confused by all these Fads so our qualified nutritionists are dedicated educating individuals about facts, supported by scientific evidence so that we share accurate information and solutions with our clients.

As for the question as to whether to take a dietary supplement or not, Rosemary Barclay of Bonne Santé Wellness Center says the short answer is that it depends on an individual’s health profile. There are many factors that influence an individual’s health with nutrition being among the forefront. . Here is the truth about dietary supplements and when it is a good idea to take them.

When are Dietary Supplements Necessary
Of course, everyone wants to look and feel their best, particularly baby boomers who are on the eternal quest for anti-aging remedies. That is a great selling point for dietary supplements but let’s examine some facts behind it, which is why it is important when to know when to take dietary supplements.

The only reason dietary supplements are necessary is when there is a dietary deficiency or a particular vitamin or mineral is not processed efficiently by the body and is deficient. The best way to receive vitamins and minerals are through good nutrition; not a pill but when a vitamin can help a certain health condition or is of a very low blood level that’s the time to take a supplement.

Yet, sometimes that is not possible. Eating highly processed foods causes vitamins and minerals to become depleted, primarily through the process of processing. Heat that’s often used in food processing can also denature proteins in the food and severely deplete vital nutrients and vitamins There are certain people who do not eat the right foods, or enough of the right foods. Whether this is due to a food allergy or personal taste, their body needs more of a vitamin or mineral then food provides. Instead of trying to figure it out for yourself, however, it is a good idea to consult with a health professional.

Asian objects from the collection of the late Dr. Ronald J. DiCenzo will headline Gray's Sept. 12th auction in Cleveland

Early 20th century Chinese temple size cloisonne censer, 34 inches tall.

Pair of early 20th century Chinese cloisonne pedestals, 34 inches tall.

Dr. DiCenzo's enthusiasm for Japanese culture and Asian culture overall are brilliantly displayed thru his superb collection of fine decorations and furniture.

Dr. DiCenzo's collection was perhaps one of the most extensive in Ohio. Any enthusiast of East Asian culture, craftsmanship and décor will be sure to appreciate this auction.”

— Serena Harragin

CLEVELAND, OHIO, UNITED STATES, August 29, 2018 / — CLEVELAND, Ohio – The private collection of the late Dr. Ronald J. DiCenzo, the former Professor of History and East Asian Studies at Oberlin College in Ohio – whose enthusiasm for Japanese culture (and Asian culture overall) are brilliantly displayed through his superb collection of fine decorations and furniture – will be auctioned on Wednesday, September 12th, by Gray’s Auctioneers & Appraisers.

The auction will be held online and in Gray’s showroom, at 10717 Detroit Avenue in Cleveland, starting at 10 am Eastern time. For those unable to attend in person, online bidding will be available through the Gray’s website,, and at and Telephone and absentee bids will also be accepted. Dr. DiCenzo passed away on November 4th, 2017.

“Dr. DiCenzo's collection was perhaps one of the most extensive in Ohio,” said Serena Harragin, CEO of Gray’s Auctioneers & Appraisers. “While most of the lots are Chinese in origin, there is also a wide variety of Japanese artifacts, such as the set of 12 woodblock prints or the authentic Katana with Saya. Any enthusiast of East Asian culture, craftsmanship and décor will be sure to appreciate this auction.”

Lot 307 is a beautiful watercolor and ink scroll by early 20th century Chinese calligraphy artist Pu Jian (1893-1966), also often referred to as Pu Jin. A member of the Manchu Imperial family and a cousin of the last emperor of China, Pu Jian was part of an elite Beijing painting circle known as the Songfeng huahui, or the Pine Breeze Painting Society. Most of its members were relatives of the Imperial family.

Pu Jian lived through a tumultuous period in modern Chinese history. His surviving works demonstrate a devotion to traditional Chinese painting and crafts. The scroll, titled Scholar in a Landscape, depicts a Confucian scholar and his attendant traversing a bridge by a waterfall, surround by dense foliage depicted vividly in the traditional style practiced by Pu and his contemporaries in the Songfeng huahui.

Lot 398 is a large Japanese burled elm wood Tansu chest with brass mounts from the 20th century. A longtime fixture of Japanese homes, large size cabinets such as the one up for auction are designed to be disassembled into smaller pieces for easy relocation. The word Tansu is derived from two Japanese characters – tan and su – which refer to the storage of food and the carrying of firewood, respectively.

Lot 15 is a pair of Chinese “Foo Dog” roof tile finials. While erroneously known as “Foo Dogs” in the West, the mythical creatures depicted in these finials and many other pieces of traditional Chinese art and sculpture are actually lions. These guardian figures have long been a fixture of Imperial Chinese heraldry, ceramics and architecture dating back at least as far as the Han Dynasty in the 6th century AD.

Leading off the auction this month is a wonderful collection of Chinese blanc de chine ceramic figures. Known to the Chinese as Dehua porcelain, blanc de chine porcelain production dates back to the Ming Dynasty and is produced in the town of Dehua, in the Fujian province. First exported to Europe in the early 18th century, these ceramics became internationally renowned for their uniquely pure ivory tone.

Lots 1-8 are blanc de chine figures of Guanyin, the sacred bodhisvattas of Chinese religion and folklore. Lot 9 is a large singular male Foo Dog. Lot 10 comprises two smaller male Foo Dogs with a Guanyin. Lot 11 is a matched pair of male and female Foo Dogs. Lot 12 is a collection of six smaller blanc de chine decorative items, including Guanyin, Budai (or “Laughing Buddha”), Gautama Buddha, and a small lidded bowl. Lot 13 is a 9-inch blanc de chine vase depicting mythical creatures in relief.

A Lovingly Look at Florists’ Web Reputation in North America.

When Lovingly looks at florists’ web reputation in North America it's all about building trust.

“For Lovingly, building trust starts with local businesses and it extends to gift-givers and recipients,” says Ken Garland. “That means optimized ecommerce websites, along with a suite of features and services inclusive with partnership.”

GDPR, California Privacy Act, Google Search Best Practices, Oh My! It all comes down to building trust.

For Lovingly, building trust starts with local businesses and extends from there to gift-givers and recipients. That’s how Lovingly creates long-term success.”

— Lovingly co-founder and managing partner, Ken Garland.

FISHKILL, NY, USA, August 29, 2018 / — Google rewards higher domain authority and, therefore, creates a higher search page ranking to https-secure* websites that have the ultimate recipe of relevant, fresh content, impeccably presented with mobile-friendly technology and stellar reviews. (*August 2018: According to Lovingly research, only 40% of NA Florists have fully secure websites.)

The Trends Speak for Themselves:
Savvy online shoppers demand elegant user-experiences for gifts and floral arrangement websites. If not, they run for the hills. Or, more precisely, they search for another website that gives them what they want, when they want it, without hiccups. In other words: They want simplified, streamlined, secure and satisfying online shopping experiences. That optimal experience provides a seamless connection between retail solutions and compelling content. Moreover, it is delivered flawlessly by developing trust with the shopper and by providing a comforting experience for the gift recipient.

All This, and Challenges To Spare:
Over the past 10 years, the contraction of real, local florists along Main Street North America has been pronounced. The most helpful technology providers to these groups position their business for the mobile shopper. They also counter the ill effects of Order Gatherers masquerading as real, local florists, when in fact they act as middlemen, often stripping away any viable margin from floral arrangement sales. Retail florists can up their success rate by pivoting with the times while helping shoppers celebrate life’s special moments. It’s all about embracing intuitive technology that supports meaningful relationships up and down the distribution chain.

On Facilitating Trust at Every Touch:
The recipe for success with shoppers is pretty basic: Give them 100% secure websites (Google Standards, all pages encrypted – not just the checkout page), proactive privacy compliance (GDPR), impeccable online reputation management, best practice search optimization/SEM while providing an enjoyable, productive user experience. As for the California Privacy Act, Lovingly acknowledges, proactively follows and will consider the implications well before the Bill’s implementation currently set for Jan. 1, 2020.

Tech providers can best align with retailers by providing them with user-friendly tools to defend their roles in their local community. This strategy alone goes a long way to stem the loss of these meaningful contributors to the social fabric of Main Street, North America. In fact, Lovingly created a HTTPS status checker tool, for free, so that any floral business could check the status of their website, regardless of whether or not they are a partner. That tool can be located here:

Add to that, Lovingly Weddings provides an example of fortifying flower shops; it’s a free referral system for engaged couples. It builds trust while streamlining and improving the on-boarding process of Wedding Clients to Lovingly Partners. And it works simply by taking pesky frustrations off the table in a Floral Services Wedding Consult.

Education also builds trust between florists, gift shoppers and their recipients. It helps close up the gap between expectations and capabilities. To further the cause, Lovingly has delivered online business-building consulting on a one-to-one basis to partner shops. Lovingly also provides Ebooks for Best Practices in Online Floral Sales, holds business seminars at Floral Trade events and sponsors Floral Designers’ continuing education seminars.

Then there’s the recently announced Lovingly U, which adds another level of commitment to educational content to bolster trust in the real, local flower shop offering. Lovingly is presently building the education team while drafting the curriculum and the distribution model. The new Lovingly U web page can be viewed as of August 27, 2018.

“For Lovingly, building trust starts with local businesses and extends from there to gift-givers and recipients,” says Lovingly co-founder and managing partner, Ken Garland. “That means optimized ecommerce websites, along with a suite of features and services inclusive with partnership. No hidden fees. No long lists of additional charges. Craftspeople can’t build relationships with their clients with stumbling blocks at every step. Great user experience and support is for everyone. That’s how Lovingly creates long-term success.”

The Trend is Trust!
In ecommerce and the gifting techspace, it’s extremely beneficial to be fully compliant with Google. Lovingly continues to advocate for best practices at every touch between the distribution chain and the consumer. It’s the surest path to build trust and a powerful recipe for online success for everyone involved.

The Lovingly Outlook:
The European/US governmental dialog (Privacy Shield) shouldn’t stop the online floral industry providers from erring on the safe side of always building trust for shoppers, for their recipients and the distribution outlets — they’re real, local florists and community heroes.

Trust Comes First… Online consumer loyalty, stronger relationships and higher conversion rates follow.

About Lovingly: Lovingly strengthens relationships through meaningful gift-giving and shared experiences. Founded over ten years ago, the company has introduced many firsts to the online floral industry.
