CRANSTON, RI, UNITED STATES, February 19, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — A figural charcoal on paper drawing by the renowned and well-traveled portrait artist John Singer Sargent (Mass./U.K./Italy, 1856-1925) sold for $22,800 at a two-session auction held Feb. 15 by Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers, online and in the Cranston gallery at 63 Fourth Avenue. Majolica pieces, fine art and steam engines all fared well in the auction.

The Sargent drawing was a study for Moloch, the god of material possessions, from the Pagan Gods Mural that adorns the walls of the Boston Public Library. Sargent was approached for this commission by the library’s architects in a project that lasted from 1895-1919. Sargent achieved fame and fortune for his elegant depictions of high society, particularly the portrait Madame X.

Session 1 of the sale, held in the morning, featured an important single-owner collection of steam engines, cast-iron and other pre-World War II toys and other items. Session 2, starting at 12:30 pm, showcased Bruneau & Co.’s normal mix of antiques, fine art, decorative arts, silver and more, to include an outstanding collection of English, German and French Majolica collectibles.

“The Sargent was the second lot in Session 2 and it topped its $10,000-$15,000 estimate, selling to a phone bidder,” said Travis Landry, a Bruneau & Co. specialist and auctioneer. “The drawing carried a huge amount of interest. It was also exciting to see a George Jones pitcher, which I had to drop from $200 to $50 just to get an opening bid, hammer for $900” ($1,125 with premium).

Another George Jones piece – a majolica partridge tureen made in England around 1875, had a pre-sale estimate of $400-$600 but ended up brining a robust $5,000. The 7-inch-tall tureen featured a figural nesting bird handle atop a leafy lid, with rabbits and oak trees decorating the bowl against a pale blue background. Other majolica pieces in the auction also performed well.

These included a three-piece Minton and English majolica teapot grouping from the late 19th or early 20th century. Included were one Minton lemon teapot with a mushroom lid, one Minton apple blossom teapot and one teapot with an applied branch handle and spout with bird finial. The yellow teapot was marked “Minton John Mortlock”. The group changed hands for $5,000.

“It was great to see that the Majolica market is alive and well for the great pieces,” said Kevin Bruneau, president of Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers, who added, “It was an amazing day all the way through, from passionate collectors during the steam engine sale in house to international bidders on fine and Asian arts. This sale had a ton of interest. Everyone went home pleased.”

Steam engines proved popular. Top lots included an early 20th century German horizontal steam engine with a large flywheel mounted to a footed casing decorated with stencil designs, retaining some original paint ($1,875); and a group of three early 20th century American steam engine pumps: two horizontal double flywheel pumps and one vertical cast iron electric pump ($1,250).

Following are additional highlights from the auction. Internet bidding was facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com, Invaluable.com, Bidsquare.com and bidLIVE.Bruneauandco.com, plus the mobile app ‘Bruneau & Co.’ on iTunes or GooglePlay. Prices quoted include buyer’s premium.

A Jeff Koons (American, b. 1955) porcelain blue balloon dog in the original box fetched $7,500. The 10 ½ inch diameter, striking cobalt blue metallic dog, mounted to a silver mirror polished plate, was edition #1,495 of 2,300. Koons’s sculptures depict everyday objects, including balloon animals. They’re made from stainless steel, with mirror-finish surfaces. He works in New York.

Also earning $7,500 was a two-piece art glass sculpture by the noted American glass artist Dale Chihuly (b. 1941). The striking creation was an organic abstract yellow and red shell-shaped basket cradling a red and yellow jack-in-the-pulpit footless vase. The sculpture, 7 ½ inches tall and marked “Chihuly” on the bottom, was in a display having an overall height of 14 inches.

An oil on canvas painting by James Brade Sword (Pa., 1839-1915), depicting Long Pond on Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., housed in a 23 inch by 35 inch frame, gaveled for $5,312. The work,
signed "J. B. Sword" lower left, was an Impressionist landscape depiction of the vast greenery that Martha's Vineyard offers, catching clouds rolling across an evening sky.

A large standing gilt bronze Buddha, made in Thailand in the 19th century and standing 68 inches tall from finial to feet (77 inches overall, counting the 9-inch wood base), commanded $6,600. The finely cast, gilt Buddha was shown with his arms outstretched and with a pleasant and serene face, mother of pearl eyes and an elaborate robe and sash.

A pair of fine, cloisonné Gu vases from the Qing Dynasty rose to $3,438. The powder blue multi-piece construction vases, 19 ½ inches tall, were decorated with lotus flower, taotie and lingzhi mushroom patterns and displayed vibrant gilt bronze throughout both.

Ethicon Prosima TVT-O Case Progressing Forward in New York Federal Court

Ben Martin, Esq. and Laura Baughman, Esq. defend their client, an unfortunate victim of the Ethicon transvaginal mesh product, in New York.

The TVT-O and Prosima devices cause pudendal neuralgia…The magnitude of the risk of catastrophic pain makes these devices defective and unreasonably dangerous under the law.”

— Dr. Greg Vigna

SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, February 19, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — On February 11, 2020, Ben Martin, Esq. and Laura Baughman, Esq. together defended their client’s deposition in New York. The client was the unfortunate victim of the Ethicon transvaginal mesh product and suffered severe neurological injuries from the Prosima and TVT-O. The case is proceeding forward in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York (Case No: 2-19-cv-04021).

Greg Vigna, MD, JD, practicing physician, national pharmaceutical injury attorney, and Certified Life Care Planner discusses, “This case is one of many that my team is prosecuting outside the Multidistrict Litigation in West Virginia after the case was dismissed without prejudice after unsuccessful attempts at settlement in the MDL.” Vigna adds, “The MDL did a good job dealing with the issue of bladder and vaginal erosion, but little for women with disability caused by the catastrophic neurological injuries caused by transvaginal mesh. The cases we are prosecuting are those with symptoms consistent with pudendal neuralgia, obturator neuralgia, ilioinguinal neuralgia, and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.”

The Prosima project was coined by Ethicon as “Project Mint” as it was designed to improve on the Prolift by eliminating the transobturator arms of the Prolift. An Ethicon internal document stated that the “Mint (had) potential to be positioned…for patients whose prolapse is not severe enough to warrant Prolift.”

Dr. Vigna states, “This case illustrates that Ethicon found it necessary to devise a transvaginal mesh device for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) that eliminates the transobturator arms of the Prolift but continues to market the TVT-O for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) that is 45 cm long with arms that pass through the obturator fossa.” He adds, “Both the TVT-O and Prosima devices cause pudendal neuralgia, and the TVT-O cause obturator neuralgia. The magnitude of the risk of catastrophic pain makes these devices defective and unreasonably dangerous under the law.”

Greg Vigna, MD, JD through his California and Washington DC law firm along with national pharmaceutical injury law firms including national pharmaceutical injury trial law firm Martin Baughman from Dallas Texas represent many catastrophically injured women proceeding down the path to justice. Dr. Vigna says, “Our clients include those awaiting remand from the MDL to the Federal Courts across the country, those who have had cases dismissed without prejudice from the MDL, women in the New Jersey consolidated litigation awaiting their time in court, and newly injured women with catastrophic injuries with symptoms consistent with neuralgia across the country.”

The Political Animal: The Crazy Radicals Who Hurt Animals and Make Us Scratch Our Heads

Bear Protection Act

Bear Protection Act

Wayne Pacelle

Wayne Pacelle

Animal Wellness Brands Logo

Organ harvesting of bears and breeding of tigers for cub petting are matters federal lawmakers should handle without a second thought

WASHINGTON, DC, USA, February 19, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — by Wayne Pacelle

For charitable purposes only, I wish I had a dollar for every time I told a lawmaker or anyone else about some peculiar form of animal exploitation and they replied, “I had no idea that kind of thing happens.”

So many forms of animal exploitation are so far out that they seem contrived or fanciful.

Who would think it’s fun or challenging to shoot a drugged lion in a fenced enclosure at a canned hunting facility in South Africa?

Or a trainer injuring the feet of a Tennessee Walking Horse so severely the poor creature throws his front legs high into the air as a reaction to the pain?

Or a shopper buying a pangolin or a bat from a live-animal market and taking the animal home to eat?
Animal abuse can be as surprising as it is crude and diabolical.

The team at Animal Wellness and I have been making the rounds on Capitol Hill lately on two bills – the Bear Protection Act and the Big Cat Public Safety Act.

It doesn’t take a medical degree to realize it’s quackery to think sprinkling an ounce of dried bear gallbladder into water produces a life-saving elixir.

It shouldn’t take more than an ounce of common sense to understand that if your life depends on ingesting that kind of potion, you must be able to find some better treatment options.

Yet there’s organized exploitation of bears to obtain their gallbladders. Some small set of would-be entrepreneurs in China, South Korea, and Vietnam breed and keep bears in pits, extract bile from them and eventually cut out their bladders in what amounts to a barbaric organ-harvesting enterprise. And throughout the world, there are poachers who kill bears in the wild to extract their organs an sell them for thousands of dollars on the black market.

The Bear Protection Act, introduced by Senators John Kennedy, R-La., and Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Reps. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., and Rodney Davis, R-Ill., would ban any interstate trade, imports or exports of bear gallbladders.

I find it hard to believe that anyone could make a straight-faced argument against such morally obvious reform. Yet opponents are stirring, offering up their prattling justifications.

But that bill is rivaled, in terms of basic good sense, by the Big Cat Public Safety Act. This bill would clarify that the trade in big cats for the pet trade is forbidden. Yes, it’s an axiom that no sane person would keep a tiger in the basement or backyard as a pet. But here’s a bill for the .01 percent – for those who just can’t find a way forward without a big cat in their lives.

The bill would also put an end to roadside zoos offering up cub-petting exhibitions. There, at the shoddy zoos, operators breed lions and tigers to produce adorable little cubs. Fetching are the kittens. But frightening are the people who engineer this hucksterism. With cub in hand, they hawk a personal experience offering ticket-buyers the opportunity to cling to and frolic with a furry infant who’s been taken away from his or her mother just weeks after birth.

After a few months, the lions and tigers get too big to handle. Soon they can rake a person with their claws or bite through their neck. Right then and there, even the opportunists running these menageries realize the cub-petting must cease.

But retiring the bigger cubs means the roadside zoos now need some little cubs. More breeding needed. And, sadly, there’s no space for the 250-pound lion, so he must go. Put his picture in the Animal Finder’s Guide and he’s whisked into the exotic animal trade.

Our nation has dozens of big cat sanctuaries because of this pathetic sequencing of events. Not one of these facilities wants to operate and clean up the mess made by human miscreants, but they do so out of a moral duty.

A national policy that doesn’t forbid this reckless breeding has the effect of placing a massive unfunded mandate on the animal welfare community. Think of these animal welfare non-profits as small operations struggling to bail water from their basement, with a pipe that’s broken and deluging them day after day. They can’t get ahead when dozens of pet owners and cub breeders keep funneling cats into the front end of that pipeline.

A tiger may live 20 years. Constructing a proper enclosure may cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. And it costs hundreds of dollars a week to feed the animal. If there are health issues, then veterinarians and tranquilizer guns must be employed to conduct even simple procedures.

The average big cat in a sanctuary may cost a facility $500,000 or even a million dollars, during the animal’s lifetime.

That’s hundreds or thousands of donations made by caring people. Money that could go to solve other problems.
If you think it’s colossally stupid to kill bears for their gallbladders and to raise tigers for petting exhibitions, call your federal lawmakers.

Urge them to cosponsor the Bear Protection Act (HR 2264 and S. 3196) and the Big Cat Public Safety Act (HR 1380 and S. 2561). You can reach your lawmaker by calling 202-224-3121.

If they haven’t heard from one of us at Animal Wellness Action or Big Cat Rescue, then maybe the person on the other end of the phone will say, “I had no idea that kind of thing happens.”

Tell them it does. And that’s why you’re calling.

Orthopedic & Sports Institute of the Fox Valley Supports Local Athletes

The Orthopedic & Sports Institute of the Fox Valley, based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, supports local athletes by offering athletic training services through the area’s high schools. The Orthopedic & Sports Institute (OSI) is committed to providing innovative, collaborative solutions to meet the needs of an ever-growing district with a diverse student population.

A Growing Trend
Statistics show that teen participation in sports is on the rise. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 30 million children and teens participate in some form of organized sports each year. At first glance, this seems like good news. However, high school athletes account for nearly two million injuries, 500,000 doctor visits, and 30,000 hospitalizations per year. Another startling fact: Although 62 percent of organized sports-related injuries occur during practice, one-third of parents do not have their children take the same safety precautions at practice that they would during a game.

Partnering with Area Schools
OSI is passionate about supporting the local youth by partnering with the Appleton Area School District to offer athletic training services to Appleton High School students. By providing these services at the high school level, OSI hopes to help young athletes learn to practice, train, and play more safely, thereby reducing the potential for future injuries.

OSI delivers a comprehensive, best-in-class program that includes:
● Licensed Athletic Trainers at East, North & West
● Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialists
● Concussion Management Services
● Orthopedic Physician High School Game Coverage
● Club Sport Injury Management
● Onsite Testing for Wrestling
● Summer Conditioning Program
● Junior High Sports Coverage
● Community Program Director

April Fools 5 K Fun Run/Walk

The OSI-Miron April Fools’ 5K Fun Run/Walk has become one of the most popular spring wellness events designed to raise money for the Appleton high school sports programs. OSI dedicates a team and resources to organize and support the success of The April Fools’ 5K Run/Walk – the 2019 event raised $21,000 and collectively since 2010 the event has enabled OSI to donate a total of $141,000 to Appleton North, East and West athletic programs.

If you would like to help support the Appleton high schools as a sponsor for the 10th Annual OSI – MIRON April Fools’ 5k Fundraiser on April 3, 2020 @ 6pm, please contact OSI’s Community Program Director, Courtney Vosters, at 920.560.1057 or https://osifv.com/event/april-fools-5k-run-walk/ The race is a fundraiser for the AASD High School athletic programs and operates under a 501c3.

To register as a runner/walker or for more information visit https://runsignup.com/Race/WI/Appleton/AprilFools

Medical Mentoring of the Fox Valley
OSI also runs a mentoring program for high school students who have an interest in a medical career. Medical Mentoring of the Fox Valley pairs interested high school students with a mentor from OSI or another medical facility. Students, who are paired with mentors based on area of interest, spend three half-days observing mentors in day-to-day activities, which helps students gain a better understanding of what’s involved in a medical career. This program also offers job shadow opportunities with physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, physical therapists, and surgical technologists.

OSI Puts Everything in One Place
The Orthopedic & Sports Institute of the Fox Valley is an all-encompassing orthopedic care facility that combines non-surgical, surgical, and post-surgical orthopedic care under one roof. OSI also offers an ambulatory surgery center, physician clinics, physical therapy, MRI, orthotics, and pain management services. The concept of OSI is to house the entire orthopedics process in one place, streamlining it so customers don’t spend time traveling to multiple facilities to get the care they need. All of it is covered at OSI.

OSI wants to help high school athletes train and participate in sports more safely. For more information about high school programs that are available through OSI, visit https://www.osifv.com/.

Brazil Cold Chain Industry

BRAZIL, February 19, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — "The adoption of modern technologies and automation in cold storage facilities along with better transport infrastructure and connectivity is expected to accelerate the growth of the Cold Chain Market in Brazil."

Large Unmet Need for Refrigerated Storage: According to the Global Storage Capacity Report, 2018 by the Global Cold Chain Alliance, Brazil has a large unmet need for refrigerated storage. The increasing per capita income and grocery retail spending in the country has led to an increase in the consumption of refrigerated and processed foods but the storage capacity still falls short. The country’s Market Development Index which measures the storage capacity per urban resident, stood at 0.106 in 2018 while the index for India was 0.343 which shows the unmet need and demonstrates the potential for growth of the cold storage industry in Brazil in future.

For more information, refer to below link:

https://www.kenresearch.com/automotive-transportation-and-warehousing/logistics-and-shipping/brazil-cold-chain-market-outlook/257745-100.html

Technological Improvement and Automation: Cold chain companies in Brazil are adopting better and modern cold chain technologies such as Radio Frequency Identification in warehouses, Cloud Storage and Internet of Things for real-time inventory management, Electronic Data Interchange to facilitate smooth exchange of information with clients during transportation and more. There is also scope for implementing automation in the storage facilities using drones and robots which will significantly improve the efficiency of the Cold Chain industry in the country and positively impact its growth.

Infrastructural Development: The government of Brazil has been initiating programmes such as the National Logistics Plan and Investment Partnerships Program to modernize and expand the transport infrastructure in the country and reduce the dependence on road transportation. A budget of USD 10 billion has been allocated to the project in order to improve the infrastructure and improve the efficiency of the logistics supply chain. Better transport infrastructure is expected to drive the growth of the Brazil Cold Chain Market in the forecast period and increase the contribution of the Cold Transport to the overall industry.

Analysts at Ken Research in their latest publication “Brazil Cold Chain Market Outlook to 2023 – By Cold Storage and Cold Transportation, By Ownership (Owned and Rented), By End Users (Meat and seafood, Fruits and Vegetables, Dairy products, Bakery and Confectionery, Pharmaceuticals and others)” believe that rising exports of meat and sub-tropical fruits and expansion of the transport infrastructure in the country coupled with adopting automation and technologies in the cold chain facilities will positively impact the growth of the Cold Chain market in Brazil.
