SINGAPORE, April 30, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — The coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc on the smartphone market in Q1 2020, with shipments falling 13% to 272 million units. Samsung returned to the top of the market, but its shipments fell 17% to 60 million. Huawei shipped 49 million, as its mix continues to shift toward China and away from overseas markets due to its US Entity List status. Apple was the third largest vendor, down 8% with 37 million shipments. Xiaomi, the best performer in the top five, managed 9% growth to hit 30 million units, while Vivo finished fifth with 24 million units, up 3%.

The smartphone market entered 2020 in good health, having just recorded two consecutive quarters of growth. “But demand for new devices has been crushed,” said Canalys Senior Analyst Ben Stanton. “In February, when the coronavirus was centered on China, vendors were mainly concerned about how to build enough smartphones to meet global demand. But in March, the situation flipped on its head. Smartphone manufacturing has now recovered, but as half the world entered lockdown, sales plummeted. Poor business results, employee redundancies and furloughs are causing a great deal of anxiety and uncertainty. Smartphones are still a necessity for most people, and device availability in online channels has enabled those who need to replace a broken or lost phone to do so. But many customers who would have bought a new smartphone as a luxury have delayed that purchase.”

“Few smartphone vendors were able to withstand the impact,” said Canalys Analyst Shengtao Jin. “Samsung was in a positive position in February, due to its manufacturing focus in Korea and Vietnam. But this advantage quickly dissipated as COVID-19 spread around the world. Apple was one of the least affected vendors, owing to strong sales of the iPhone 11 in the early stages of the quarter. Its recent iPhone SE launch is strategically vital, as Apple needs to prop up iPhone shipments as its flagship customers await 5G devices. Huawei was forced to juggle the dual impact of coronavirus and its ongoing US Entity List problems. Its overseas shipments plummeted 35% as it launched its first P series handset family without Google Mobile Services, the P40. But channels are wary of exposing themselves to the risk of these untested products, so they are ranged in fewer channels than their predecessors, and initial channel orders are lower than Huawei would expect.”

“The impact on smartphone channels is colossal,” said Canalys Analyst Vincent Thielke. “Omni-channel retailers in strict lockdown regions, such as Europe, are doing their best to shift offline store stock into online distribution channels, but this is costly, and their capacity, in terms of warehousing, haulage and delivery, is not geared up for a full switch to online. This also limits the brand-new devices they need to buy from vendors and distributors in the short term. In these regions, it is the ecommerce channels that will have a clear advantage in the coming weeks.”
“Most smartphone companies expect Q2 to represent the peak of the coronavirus’ impact,” said Stanton. “It will test the mettle of the industry, and some companies, especially offline retailers, will fail without government support. As lockdowns around the world start to lift, the full economic damage will become visible. Smartphone companies must adapt their strategies to mitigate the impact, as cashflow will be critical in the coming months. But if they cut back too much on product spend, marketing spend and new strategic initiatives, they risk losing agility, and will lose ground to rivals once demand bounces back. It is vital to strike a balance.”

We’ve been told to be patient and watch day after day, while longing for the time our social distancing will end.

United in fear, we are stopped in our tracks. It’s as if there is a God who is saying, “Stop.” “Love one another.” And “Appreciate the great gift of the life I have given you.”

Do we have a choice? The only choice that makes sense is to follow the rules, obey the experts, and remain patient for that future day when we’ll all be free again.

Of course, life as we knew it is no more. The priority of making money has easily surrendered to preventing the spread of infection. Even if we are bored or tired of staying home during the ravages of this plague, it’s inconceivable and even reckless to carry on and put people’s lives at risk.

Businesses have closed, and we want them to reopen. Production and distribution of goods throughout the world have been drastically affected, and we want to start it all up again. But we’re told to wait a little longer, and perhaps a little longer again. As we adapt to the new normal, respecting all the rules with everyone’s health in mind, we face the scary future. What should become very clear to us all is that our individual survival depends on the unity of mankind, which means compliance, not selfishness. No man is an island. We are all interconnected. We cannot survive alone.

The Chinese will probably emerge first. The Italians will also come back to life eventually. Koreans and others will as well. Here in America we cannot foresee when we’ll be back to business as usual, so it’s hard to be calm and ride the wave. Still, it’s our duty to do whatever it takes to see it through. Staying home is not that hard to do. From our window onto the world, we can find the strength to wait patiently and look for signs of recovery, while helping those who need it.

Four hundred years ago in England, John Donne wrote a famous poem while recovering from a serious illness. This is the human condition:

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, April 30, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — "I've been sewing since I was 10," says Judy. The mother of three and grandmother of four ages 4 to 23, had "a whole bunch of fabric collected over the years." She went through her stash and used everything that was appropriate and just as she was running out, a friend donated a box of fabric so she could keep on making 15 to 20 masks each day.

She decided to take part in the project because "a lot of people out there don't have access to things like this. It's serving a good purpose because they're reusable, they can be washed and they're filling a need for people who are providing such a valuable service and who don't have any other access to them otherwise."

Linda is a second-generation Scientologist whose sister and brother, daughter and grandchildren are also members of the Church. Up to recently, her work supervising building contracts was not considered "essential," so she was at home, riding out the pandemic.

"I started this by making some masks for my brother whose kids live in the Philippines," she says. She found out they can't go out without masks, but there were none to be had there so she created and shipped masks over to them. She was looking for what she could do with the fabric she had left over and found out her Church was making and donating masks for emergency workers.

She makes 50 masks a week—25 for the project and 25 that she sells to help make ends meet.

"I think it's fabulous to do this because it's very difficult to find masks here," she says. "The people we're making masks for are helping the homeless and other people who are neglected and left behind and what we are doing gives them the protection they need to do their jobs."

Unlike the other two, Deanna is still at work in her job at the Port of Tacoma. She makes masks when she gets home from work. She began doing this because of the daughter of one of her co-workers.

"Her daughter works in a senior facility in Montana. They had no PPE (personal protection equipment) at all. While I was making masks to ship to Montana, I was researching the availability of masks and found out it is a much bigger situation than I thought."

Unlike hospitals, long-term care facilities haven't been stocking reserves of PPE. "If residents need that level of care, they send them to a hospital," she says. But that's all changed with the pandemic and these caregivers need to wear masks and take every precaution against bringing the virus home to their families.

"Another friend of mine became aware of the mask shortage from a Facebook group she belongs to, and she started making them. A lot of them went to the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle.

"Then I talked to my friend Zoe from my Church, the Church of Scientology in Seattle. The Church and our Scientology Volunteer Ministers are active in WAVOAD (Washington Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster), and I was told that the Salvation Army needs masks for workers and residents at their centers."

"The Salvation Army has a mission to care for those in their emergency shelters and centers," said Rev. Ann Pearce who is handling the mask-making logistics at the Church of Scientology in Seattle. "Staff and residents are more at risk without these masks, so we are making as many as we can to fill that need and those of others in our community as well. We also appreciate those from other faiths who have joined us on this project."

Washington was the first state to report a COVID-19 case. Currently, over 14,000 people in the state have been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Prevention is important. The Church of Scientology has created its How to Stay Well Prevention Resource Center to prevent the spread of illness and help people keep themselves and others well.

With the motto "an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure," the website includes information on how viruses and bacteria spread, how to properly wash your hands, the proper use of masks and gloves, social distancing tips, how to clean and sanitize your home, and what to do if you become sick or have symptoms.

The website is available in 17 languages and is offered as a public service by the Church of Scientology.
