Frontline Workers Report Lack of Financial & Mental Health Support from Employers

Frontline Worker

While 77% of Workers Say They Have Proper Safety Equipment, only 40% Feel Employers Have Helped Them Financially

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, August 31, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Research about frontline workers released today by SoapBoxSample reveals startling information about the experiences of essential employees. The survey of 416 essential workers, fielded May 8 – 13, 2020 highlighted the opinions of those who serve on the frontlines, either by dealing directly with the public in providing an essential service or by administering health care. Workers are more slightly more likely to express concerns about bringing the infection home to their families (72%) than they are about contracting COVID-19 themselves (69%). They are less concerned about losing their jobs (45%).

Additionally, while most workers (77%) report that their employers have provided them with necessary safety equipment, and 70% say their employers are doing what they can to keep them safe, there are two key areas where employers have fallen behind. Only 46% of essential workers report that their employer has provided them with access to mental health resources. Among all the categories explored in the survey, financial support is the area essential workers feel least supported, with just 40% saying their company has helped them financially during the pandemic. As part of their ongoing research on the impact of COVID-19, SoapBoxSample released a special supplement on essential workers as part of their n=pandemic research journal, with an accompanying one-page infographic highlighting the findings.

“Essential workers face great risks every day,” said Jacqueline Rosales, COO of SoapBoxSample and icanmakeitbetter. “Too often we rely on news organizations or statements from companies for information about what’s happening on the front lines of the pandemic. By going directly to essential workers, and asking them about their experiences, we can gain a greater understanding of what’s really going on.”

When asked how they feel about working on the frontlines, sentiments ranged from scared and stressed to frustrated. Many expressed that they felt fortunate to have a job and shared feelings of humbleness and pride at being able to help others during these unprecedented times. One survey respondent who works as a nurse treating victims of COVID-19 commented, “This is why I became a nurse. To be there for people when no one else will.”

“I feel like I am putting my life and my family’s life at risk by working, but I don’t have a choice,” commented one worker. “Customers don’t respect your space…uncaring at times and rude, “stated another. When asked how the public can help make their jobs easier, many mentioned wearing a mask, social distancing and embracing cleaning procedures. One respondent commented, “Remember that those of us still working have families that we are concerned about.”

To access SoapBoxSample’s comprehensive report on COVID-19, visit SoapBoxSample.com/pandemic. Visitors can download the 68-page journal, which covers the US public’s perceptions of the virus, shopping habits, work life, experiences with quarantining, finances, government, business owners, and many more. SoapBoxSample has made this valuable research available at no charge, in the hope that the data they have gathered can help communities understand the fundamental shifts caused by the pandemic.

Recently SoapBoxSample gained national attention for their work in helping communities evaluate the spread of COVID-19 through antibody testing. In March 2020, they released the results of a comprehensive study that measured the presence of COVID-19 antibodies in hundreds of Los Angeles County residents. That study was featured on the KTLA Evening News, Business Insider and The Journal of the American Medical Association. In August of 2020, SoapBoxSample released the results of a similar study involving Riverside County.

Whether Distance Learning or Learning in the Classroom, Academic Decline Could be a Sign of Hearing Loss

Children with hearing loss may struggle with distance learning

Unfortunately, we continue to see children identified as having a learning disability when they actually have untreated hearing loss.”

— Catherine Palmer, Ph.D., president of the American Academy of Audiology

RESTON, VIRGINIA, USA, August 31, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — As parents and children across the U.S. get back to education, whether that will be in-person, virtual, or some mix of the two; the American Academy of Audiology recommends that parents and teachers pay close attention to children’s hearing ability. Education is primarily delivered through auditory input, whether in person or virtually, and even a mild hearing loss can impact a child’s success in school. Children with untreated hearing loss use more cognitive energy to understand what is being said or may appear to not be paying attention because they are missing what was said. A drop in academic performance could be a sign of hearing loss. According to the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, about two to three out of every 1,000 children in the United States are born with a detectable level of hearing loss in one or both ears. The total number of children with some type of hearing loss is unknown and many cases may go undiagnosed.

The American Academy of Audiology recommends that any parents concerned with an otherwise unexplained decline in their children’s academic performance or any sign of hearing loss should take them to an audiologist to have their hearing tested.

While most infants’ hearing is tested within hours of birth, hearing loss can be progressive and start in early childhood. In addition, ear infections and exposure to loud sounds as well as various illness can cause hearing loss.

“A child with minimal hearing loss may be missing a significant amount of the classroom discussion,” said Catherine Palmer, Ph.D., president of the American Academy of Audiology and professor, University of Pittsburgh and director of audiology for the UPMC Health System. “Unfortunately, we continue to see children identified as having a learning disability when they actually have untreated hearing loss. Hearing loss should always be ruled out when there are academic and speech and language issues. We want to treat the hearing loss first since untreated hearing loss can disrupt all aspects of educational success.” Palmer continued, “Virtual education is a new challenge. Parents and teachers will want to make sure that the auditory signal coming through the computer is good quality. The child’s audiologist can assist in connectivity from the computer audio signal directly to the hearing aids. For some children with hearing loss, the virtual environment may be preferable at this time because the teacher and other students don’t wear masks when interacting virtually.” Masks block the visual signal that assists a person with hearing loss in understanding speech. In the in-person environment, it will be ideal if teachers wear masks with a clear piece that allows visualization of the mouth.

Lack of hearing can lead to behavioral issues, lack of focus, even depression in children. Children with hearing loss often don’t recognize that they can’t hear and parents may not know the signs.

Here are some of the signs parents and teachers should look for:
• Child has difficulty following through with assignments and often doesn’t seem to
understand the task.
• Child often doesn’t understand questions and either does not respond or doesn’t respond appropriately.
• Child’s speech is different from other children the same age. He/she may struggle to pronounce simple words or is unable to repeat a phrase. May have problems articulating or may have language delays.
• Child often asks you to repeat things or watches your face intently trying to understand what you’re saying.
• Child has difficulty hearing on the phone.
• Child speaks loudly when not warranted.
• Child has chronic ear pain.
• Child often complains of noises he/she cannot identify.
• Child cannot keep up academically.
• Child appears exhausted at the end of the school day (more so than other children.)
• With distance learning, children with hearing loss may turn up the volume on the computer or headphones louder than expected for typical communication.

“Often parents and teachers don’t realize that a child’s behavior may be a sign of hearing loss,” Palmer explained. “If parents suspect an issue, they should have their child evaluated by an audiologist. Audiologists have the tools and training to identify hearing loss, degrees of hearing loss, and can recommend solutions for children of any age. Hearing clinics are open and have detailed protocols and safety measures during the pandemic.”

U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell Announces Compromise Legislation to End Doping and Deaths in American Horseracing

WASHINGTON, DC, USA, August 31, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell today announced his intent to introduce the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, compromise legislation that would end the doping of Thoroughbred racehorses in the United States.

The doping of American racehorses has been a controversial issue over the past five years with hundreds of horses dying on racetracks weekly, and the indictment of 37 trainers and veterinarians in March of 2020.

Animal Wellness Action (AWA) has been a leader in the effort to end doping and is a member of the Coalition for Horseracing Integrity Act, H.R. 1754/S. 1820 with 257 House cosponsors and 26 Senate cosponsors. AWA’s executive director, Marty Irby, testified before Congress in support of the measure to end doping in January.

“The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act will bring 16 hands of integrity back to American horseracing by banning race-day doping,” said Marty Irby, a lifelong horseman and executive director at Animal Wellness Action. “U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and others are right to press the industry to create a uniform anti-doping standard that will protect the horses and the sport against the worst impulses of some of its actors.”

“Kentucky is proud of our distinct horseracing traditions. We must address the challenges the sport faces so we can preserve our heritage and the jobs of over 24,000 Kentuckians who support it,” said U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. “As Senate Majority Leader, I look forward to working with Congressman Barr and our colleagues across the aisle on our legislation to give federal recognition to the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority. Together, we can better protect every competitor and give each of them a fair shot at the Winner’s Circle.”

Building on the Horseracing Integrity Act, McConnell’s Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) is landmark legislation that would directly address the safety and welfare of racehorses, and the integrity of the sport itself, through better anti-doping measures and racetrack safety standards.

In an illustration of the broad industry support for change, this bill is now supported by all three Triple Crown racetracks, as Churchill Downs has endorsed the bill for the first time. The effort continues to enjoy the support of the Coalition for Horse Racing Integrity (CHRI), which includes the Jockey Club, the Breeders Cup, Keeneland Racecourse, the Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders Association, the Water Hay Oats Alliance, and animal welfare groups like Animal Wellness Action.

The fractured nature of anti-doping and track safety efforts across the U.S.’s 38 racing jurisdictions has undermined the public’s confidence in horseracing, threatened the integrity of competition, and endangered the human and equine athletes. Enactment of the HISA will address these problems head on while helping to enhance the public’s interest in this very important industry. For the safety of the horses and jockeys, and for the sport of horseracing itself, American horseracing needs the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act of 2020.

Key Provisions
In order to create these uniform performance and safety standards for the sport of horseracing, the HISA creates the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, which is a private, independent, self-regulatory, nonprofit organization. It will not be funded by the federal government – the horseracing industry will pay the funds necessary for the establishment and administration of the Authority. The Authority is tasked with developing and implementing both a horseracing anti-doping and medication control program and a racetrack safety program.

Composition of the Authority
The Authority will be governed by a Board of Directors consisting of nine members. Five of those members will be independent of the industry, and four members will be experts from the following sectors of the industry: owners and breeders, trainers, racetracks, veterinarians, State racing commissions, and jockeys. To assist with the development of these programs, the Board will establish an anti-doping and medication control standing committee and a racetrack safety standing committee, both controlled by independent members outside the industry. All independent members of the Board and standing committees will be subject to strict conflict-of-interest standards.

Anti-Doping Program
The Authority will be required to create a set of uniform anti-doping rules, including lists of prohibited substances and methods, protocols around the administration of permitted substances, and laboratory testing accreditation and protocols. These permitted and prohibited substances and practices will be developed after taking into consideration international anti-doping standards and veterinarian ethical standards, along with consulting racing industry representatives and the public. The new nationwide rules would replace the current patchwork of regulatory systems that govern horseracing’s 38 separate racing jurisdictions. For services related to the enforcement of this program, the Authority shall enter into an agreement with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, which has a proven track record of conducting anti-doping and medication control activities for all U.S. Olympic athletes and its approach can easily be adapted to horseracing.

Racetrack Safety Program
To protect the health and safety of racehorses and jockeys, the Authority will also create a racetrack safety program, consisting of a uniform set of training and racing safety standards and protocols. Those standards include racetrack design and maintenance, oversight of human and equine injury reporting and prevention, and the procedures for undertaking investigations at racetrack and non-racetrack facilities related to safety violations. The Authority creates an accreditation program to ensure that racetracks comply with these safety procedures, and in order to continue gather information on racetrack safety, the Authority will establish a nationwide database of racehorse safety, performance, health, and injury information within one year of the establishment of the program.

Silver Diner/Silver Owners Reinvent Restaurant Model for Post COVID with Customized Air Filtration/Purification System

Example of small machine that filter, purifies and ionizes with HEPA filter and ultraviolet light.

Air purification/filtration and ultraviolet light systems are installed throughout the restaurants. Ultraviolet lights are also inside the restaurant’s HVAC system.

Large air purifier/filtration that also uses ultraviolet light

Large air purifiers with ultraviolet light and HEPA filtration are used in high-trafficked areas such as the hostess stand.

Outdoor dining is also offered in tents.

In addition to upgrading inside ventilation, Silver Diner added outdoor dining to most of its restaurants that did not already offer the option.

First restaurant group in the nation to implement customized VLED HVAC/UV-C light system

Our goal is to make indoor dining as safe as possible to outdoor dining. We are investing in this because we believe this is the restaurant model of the future.”

— Robert Giaimo, co-founder

ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND, USA, August 31, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — For more than 30 years, forward-thinking and innovation, to enhance customer health and wellness, have been critical components to the success of Silver Diner. Building on its history as leaders in implementing healthy eating with farm-to-table and flexitarian options, the restaurant has retooled for today’s lifestyle in the wake of COVID-19 using multiple dining protocols, safety practices and cutting-edge technology. To expand on its promise of something for everyone, the restaurant instituted multiple dining options from low- contact carhop carry-out to tented outdoor cafés. To make indoor dining comfortable again and to honor their commitment to employee and customer health and wellness, Silver Diner founders are having installed a unique, Veteran LED customized interior air filtration and purification system to make dining indoors as close you can come to outdoor dining.

This is the first time this comprehensive and customized system has been used in restaurants. The system includes germicidal UV-C light, bipolar ionization technology, and HEPA filtration. Air purifiers, mounted throughout each restaurant, work to continuously clean the air by using all three technologies simultaneously. Germicidal UV-C lights installed throughout the HVAC system work to disinfect air and surfaces inside the system. Heavy duty handheld UV-C light sterilizers are being used on high touch areas as part of the closing duties of the staff. At night, when the restaurant is closed, the interior is bathed in germicidal UV-C light to help kill pathogens in the air and sterilize surfaces. The system eliminates 99.9% of pathogens encountered.

“Our goal is to make indoor dining as safe as possible to outdoor dining,” said Silver Diner group Co-founder and President Robert Giaimo. “We are investing in this because we believe this is the restaurant model of the future. It maximizes the safety of our employees and our guests.” The system that has been created is a comprehensive package of the best products and technologies available for a restaurant. All 20 restaurants will have the system in place by Aug. 12.

For more than a century, UV-C light has been used to clean air, surfaces, and water. It has been used effectively for years in hospitals, health care facilities, laboratories and schools, to name a few. On behalf of Signify, a lighting company, Boston University recently studied the impact of UV-C light on COVID-19 and determined that it definitely inactivated the virus.

Throughout the pandemic, Silver Diner and Silver, American Brasserie have provided customers with options. Implementing a robust takeout and delivery business at the onset, the restaurants then moved to establish outdoor dining at each of 20 restaurants. While some of its newer restaurants have built-in patios, most do not. Attractive tents with outdoor lighting and landscaping were installed at every location. A “Curbside Carhop” was created as well so customers had (and still have) the option of takeout, curbside carhop, delivery, indoor or outdoor dining.

Prior to being allowed to open indoors, the Silver Diner/Silver team began planning for the return of customers. They made a large investment in plexiglass and had it installed between tables and booths, they rearranged the restaurant to maintain distancing, they added hand sanitizer stations and removed all condiments and seasonings from tables. They had menus printed on anti-microbial paper. All of this in addition to the usual wearing of masks and gloves, temperature checks and minimum to no contact.

As it came time when limited customers could dine inside, the Silver Diner executive team researched the market to see if there was anything else they could do. “First of all, we wanted our employees to feel as safe as possible. Secondly, we wanted our customers to feel comfortable dining with us,” explained Giaimo. “We want to be their home away from home and we’re committed to doing whatever it takes to get them back.”

The system being installed at Silver Diner and Silver is by Veteran LED, a Richmond-based company founded by veteran Chris Rawlings. Rawlings served two tours in Iraq as a U.S. Marine and has an extensive background in lighting technology and building customized systems. Rawlings researched the top products on the market and created the unique, comprehensive package for the Silver Diner restaurant group. “We are excited to work with Silver and Silver Diner in becoming the first restaurant chain to implement this cutting-edge technology,” said Rawlings. “This pandemic is forcing businesses, engineers, architects and more, to rethink how proven technology and a little innovation can go a long way in helping to support a safer environment for all building occupants. Air quality and healthy environments are on the forefront of all of our minds right now. We’re obligated to use our resources and knowledge, based on scientific evidence, to effectively address this concern.”

Silver Diner has long been known as an industry leader. Before farm-to-table soared in popularity, Silver Diner implemented the practice at all its diners. More than three years ago, award-winning Executive Chef and Co-founder (also winner of “Chopped”), Ype Von Hengst, added vegan, plant-based and gluten free menu items. This while still balancing “diner classics” for long-time loyal diner-lover customers. “Flexibility and adaptability have been key to our success,” added Giaimo.

This week, Silver Diner is opening its 18th restaurant in Alexandria, Virginia. The restaurant (4630 King Street, Alexandria) will feature an outdoor patio, full bar and will have the new HVAC/UV-C light system and all of the other COVID-19 practices in place. “We recognize that it’s an unusual time to open a restaurant,” Giaimo added. “But we also recognize that people want to dine out and have healthy menu options. We hope all of our efforts will bring our customers back to their home away from home.
